UK gambling rules explained: stake limits and affordability checks

The online slots stake limit, the deposit limit rules and the checks that are live rather than proposed. What applies today, what is still a pilot, and the date each came in, every figure checked against the Gambling Commission's own guidance rather than a summary of it.

The UK gambling rules that are live right now

British gambling rules changed substantially across 2024 and 2025, and a great deal of what circulates online is either out of date or was never right. Two things get confused most often. The first is the stake limits, which are real, dated and easy to state. The second is affordability checks, where the light-touch check that genuinely operates is routinely muddled with a deeper assessment that has not launched.

Everything below applies only to operators holding a British licence, because UK Gambling Commission regulations reach licensed operators and nobody else. If you are not certain a site holds one, check the address against the register before anything else, because none of these UK gambling rules reach a site that is not on it.

What changed, and when

  1. Pilot from late August 2024

Financial risk assessments remain a pilot

The deeper financial risk assessment, the one usually meant by "affordability checks", has not gone live. It has been running as a pilot since late August 2024, with no confirmed thresholds, and the Commission has said final decisions follow the pilot. Anyone telling you a fixed affordability limit already applies is ahead of the evidence.

  2. 28 February 2025

Light-touch financial vulnerability check at £150

Operators must run a light-touch check once a customer reaches £150 in net deposits in a rolling 30-day period. It uses publicly available data rather than credit reference data, and it is designed to catch financial vulnerability early. The threshold started at £500 net deposits in a rolling 30 days on 30 August 2024 and was lowered to £150 on 28 February 2025; the two figures are consecutive, not tiers for different customers.

  3. 9 April 2025

Online slots stake capped at £5 a spin

A maximum of £5 per game cycle on online slots for players aged 25 and over. It applies to slots only, not to roulette, blackjack or other casino games.

  4. 21 May 2025

Online slots stake capped at £2 a spin for 18 to 24 year olds

A lower maximum of £2 per game cycle on online slots for players aged 18 to 24. Again slots only.

Stake limits, in practice

The online slots stake limit bites hardest on high-speed play. A £5 cap sounds generous until you set it against the pace of an online slot: at the minimum two and a half seconds per spin, £5 a spin is £7,200 an hour in turnover. The cap constrains the size of a single bet, not the speed at which bets accumulate, and the speed is what empties an account.

The lower £2 cap for 18 to 24 year olds is the first age-banded online slots stake limit in the British market, and the first place UK gambling rules have treated an age group differently on a product rather than on eligibility. It reflects evidence that harm concentrates in that group rather than any judgement about individuals, and it applies automatically from the age on your verified account.

Deposit limits, and why the direction matters

Deposit limits are the tool most within your control, and the rules around them are asymmetric by design. Reducing a limit takes effect immediately. Raising one does not: a cooling-off period must pass first, so a limit cannot be lifted in the middle of a session, which is exactly when people want to lift it.

Set deposit limits on more than one timescale. A monthly limit alone still permits the entire month to disappear in one evening. The planner works out sensible figures from what you actually deposit.

Affordability checks: what is real and what is not

Gambling affordability checks are where UK gambling rules are most often misreported. One check operates today. Once your net deposits reach £150 in a rolling thirty days, a licensed operator runs a light-touch financial vulnerability check using publicly available data. It is not a credit check, it does not mark your credit file, and most customers never know it happened.

The threshold has moved once already. It began at £500 net deposits in a rolling thirty days on 30 August 2024 and dropped to £150 on 28 February 2025. Those two figures are consecutive, not two tiers applying to different people, and seeing them presented as tiers is a reliable sign that a page has not been updated.

The deeper of the two gambling affordability checks, the financial risk assessment, is a different thing and it is not live. It has been running as a pilot since late August 2024, with no confirmed thresholds for live deployment. Until that concludes, no fixed affordability limit applies to you as a matter of British gambling rules.

What the rules still do not cover

Two gaps are worth knowing about, and neither is covered anywhere in UK gambling commission regulations. Nothing in these UK gambling rules requires an operator to tell you which return-to-player configuration a given slot is running, even though the same game is commonly shipped in several. That gap has a measurable cost.

And nothing requires an operator to tell you which other brands it runs, so spreading your play across several sites can leave you with a single company, single set of deposit limits and single compliance record. The register does show it, if you look.

Questions about the UK gambling rules

What is the maximum stake on online slots in the UK?

Five pounds per game cycle if you are 25 or over, from 9 April 2025, and two pounds per game cycle if you are 18 to 24, from 21 May 2025. Both are stake limits on online slots specifically. Roulette, blackjack and the rest of the casino floor are not covered by them.

Do affordability checks apply to me?

The light-touch financial vulnerability check does, once your net deposits reach £150 in any rolling thirty days. The deeper financial risk assessment, which is what most people mean by affordability checks, has been in pilot since late August 2024 and has no confirmed live thresholds. Anyone quoting you a fixed affordability limit as though it were already law is ahead of the evidence.

What counts towards the £150?

Net deposits, meaning money in minus money out over the same rolling thirty days. Deposit £200 and withdraw £80 and you are at £120, not £200. The window rolls continuously rather than resetting with the calendar month.

Will a financial vulnerability check affect my credit score?

No. It draws on publicly available data rather than credit reference data, and it leaves no footprint on your credit file. It is designed to be invisible to the great majority of customers.

Do these UK gambling rules apply to every casino I can reach?

Only to sites holding a British operating licence. A site outside the register is bound by none of it: no stake limits, no obligation to offer deposit limits, no requirement to check on customers who start losing heavily. That is the practical reason to check a licence before you deposit rather than after.

Where can I read the rules myself?

Each entry on this page links to the Gambling Commission page it was verified against, with the date we last checked it. The rules change often enough that a summary written a year ago is frequently wrong, which is why the sources are on the page rather than in a footer.
